Great style is ageless. But when your 40s bring sandwich-generation style stress, the last thing on your mind is picking the best jewelry that reflects your personality. But it doesn’t have to be this way. The right accessories, experts shared, enhance your outfit and confidence with minimal effort.

Here are the top five accessories every woman should have in her wardrobe:

Year-Round Sunglasses

They aren’t just for Jackie O.

Nothing screams mystery like a head-turning pair of sunglasses. Whether you prefer oversized shades or Top Gun-style aviators, take time to ensure they’re comfortable and fit your face shape. That might mean shopping in person or ordering a few online and returning those that aren’t “you.”

“Sunglasses are not just for sunny days — they’re a year-round essential,” says Kim Apodaca, executive stylist and founder of Global Style Academy and Recharge Your Style. “A great pair of sunglasses not only protects your eyes but also adds an instant aura of mystery and confidence. Plus, they’re an easy way to elevate your look on those days when you’re not feeling like putting much effort into your outfit.” She suggests wearing a pair of sunglasses when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

A Well-Made Statement Bag with a Twist

Just make sure it’s functional, too.

Your bag doesn’t have to be limited to the classic colors of black or beige. Instead, focus on quality and function.

“A well-made, structured handbag is essential for a polished look,” explains Apodaca. “The key here is quality over quantity — no need for too many bags, just one that makes a statement. Think leather, maybe with gold or silver hardware, for that added touch of luxury. Whether [it’s] a crossbody, tote or handle bag, make it yours and part of your look.”

The leather Times Tote from Minor History comes in black and beige, but also in a terrific red if you’re looking for a pop of wow for your outfit. There are also some lovely totes from Kattee and Montana West.

Bright Lipstick

With eye-catching lips, they’ll remember what you said.

Lauren Petrullo, a digital marketer and speaker known for her colorful glasses, uses her lip color to inform people that there’s more to her than how she looks. She feels bold and “super bright” colors draw attention to what she is actually saying.

“I am blonde, I'm a female. [But] when I wear a brighter lip color, your attention goes to the lips,” she says. And that’s what she wants the focus to be.

If you want to add a bold lip color to your makeup bag, consider one from Clinique’s Pop Longwear Lipstick in pink or red. Or try Rinna Beauty’s lip colors, which complement a variety of skin tones while also providing moisturizing and anti-aging elements. They’re vegan and free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates and fragrance.

Bold Earrings to Add Pizzazz

Classic or contemporary — they are the must-have versatile accessory.

Whether you prefer classic hoops from J.Crew or a bold Kate Spade design, go-to earrings can make mornings easy and even fun.

“A pair of bold, statement earrings can elevate even the simplest outfit,” says Apodaca. “It’s all about finding a pair that speaks to your personal style, but also adds a touch of fun and flair.” She recommends a chandelier earring for days when you need to pull your hair into a ponytail, or a simple pair of pearl studs to “whip any outfit into classy chic.”

Try leveling up whatever style of earrings you typically like with a slightly more out-of-the-box shape. For example, if you love a typical hoop, look for a twisted, braided or geometric version, such as AMYO’s Dali Sculptural Mini Hoops, to shake things up.

All-Season Scarves

Not just for winter, a versatile scarf can add interest to any outfit.

You’re familiar with winter scarves for added warmth, but don’t forget the fun a scarf can add to your outfit without the added bulk. While you can tie them around your neck or over your shoulders, you can also use them on your handbags, in your hair or around your wrists. You’ll add a level of chic to your outfits with their unique patterns or colors. Alysee and Dahlia offer a nice assortment of scarves.

Like Apodaca says, “Think of it as your signature style accessory.”

Other Favorite Accessories

Okay, we lied — we’re not limiting you to just five accessories.

Keep in mind that belts, a classic coat and nude pumps are all great options to add to your wardrobe as well. They’re timeless picks that transition with you — no matter how your personal style evolves.

“As we get older, we tend to lose some of our natural waist definition, but a well-chosen belt can easily reclaim that,” says Apodaca. “Whether you’re wearing a dress, blouse or a loose tunic, a belt can cinch the waist and give your body shape — instantly creating a more polished and flattering silhouette.”

You’re Powerful!

Let your accessories help remind you.

We all know that who we are as a person isn’t defined by the way we look and dress, but feeling put together with the right accessories can give us a boost of confidence.

For Petrullo, her colorful accessories, including her iconic glasses, help remind her — and others — of who she is.

“I just found it really empowering,” she says. “I like doing what most people wouldn't because it showcases that I can do what most people can't. And so, the bright-colored shoes, the bright glasses, really lean into that for me.”

Apodaca says accessories should be timeless, versatile and high-quality — and the punctuation mark of every outfit to help your personality shine through.
